We, that's me & my 2 younger sisters have been brought up like any other middle class kids.... values been given utmost importance & have been imbibed in us since our childhood. Our parents always made it a point to talk to us in our mother tongue....& we respected that!
Over years while we went to school & college, the english language started taking over our native language...&at home we continued our school talks in english... slowly English was the language we would converse in mostly & our mother tongue would be used only when essential i.e while talking to mom & relatives, that too only older ones! With cousins & all our age group folks, it would be english!!
I got married & in my in laws place too I got to hear more english! So did i blend into it very well!
Now that me n my hubby are living abroad, its become much more convinient for us as well!
Gradually, English had completely taken over our mother tongue!!!
Yesterday we were invited to this distant relatives place... a family that has not been so influenced by the foriegn language(strangely for me) & continue speak in our mother tongue.
While we were conversing, my hubby & myself were struggling to find words!!! We somehow managed to mix english & konkani(thats our mother tongue) & managed the show!!
While were were heading back home, i told my husband, that it was rather very depressing that we are almost on the verge of forgetting our own language! I also expressed my view that I would want our kid (whenever that happens) to talk in Konkani at home... english is something the kid will catch up on at school! And for us, that we now need to do some serious repairing work to our language, we decided that henceforth we will make it a point to talk konkani among ourselves! We would rather be late that never!

very true! G and I most of the times converse in English/Kannada and find it strange while conversing back home. Groping for the right words is almost a given :-))
Keep writing and I've blogrolled you too :)
